About Us

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places worldwide. Established in 1965, it is a respected international authority in the field of cultural heritage conservation, recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Mission and Vision:

Mission:

  • To advance the conservation of monuments and sites for future generations.
  • To promote best practices in cultural heritage conservation through research, documentation, and dissemination of knowledge.
  • To advise governments and international organizations on cultural heritage issues.

Vision:

  • To be the leading global voice for the conservation of cultural heritage, fostering a sustainable future for our shared past.

How We Help Creative Industries

  • Developing and promoting international standards and guidelines for cultural heritage conservation.
  • Providing expertise and advice to governments, international organizations, and individual communities on conservation projects and policies.
  • Organizing conferences, workshops, and training programs to build capacity and share knowledge in the field of cultural heritage conservation.
  • Maintaining an extensive network of experts through national committees in over 100 countries who provide local expertise and support conservation efforts.
  • Contributing to the World Heritage Convention: ICOMOS plays a key role in evaluating nominations for inscription on the World Heritage List, advising UNESCO on the cultural significance and conservation needs of nominated properties.
