BACKGROUND

The creative economy is one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, generating nearly US$2.3 trillion in annual revenues, contributing 3.1% to global GDP, and employing around 6.2% of the global workforce. In ASEAN, the sector continues to gain importance, with several Member States ranking among the top globally for creative outputs and increasing recognition of the value of intellectual property and other intangible assets.

Recognizing its potential, ASEAN has adopted a shared definition of the ASEAN Creative Economy (ACE), highlighting value created through human creativity rooted in culture, heritage, arts, design, science, technology, and innovation. Regional efforts to strengthen the sector are supported through initiatives such as the Siem Reap Declaration (2022) and its integration into ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, which identifies the creative economy as a key driver of competitiveness and inclusive growth.

The ASEAN-UK Advancing Creative Economy Programme, supported by the UK Government and implemented with the British Council and the ASEAN Secretariat, further advances regional cooperation by strengthening policy development, skills, and collaboration among creative practitioners and policymakers.

Building on these efforts, the 2nd ASEAN-UK Creative Economy Symposium will convene regional leaders and stakeholders to advance ASEAN’s vision of becoming a global leader in the creative economy and support the development of the ASEAN Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries, aimed at fostering innovation, empowering creative entrepreneurs, and strengthening regional collaboration.
